India's corporate gifts exportsCompetitive advantagesChallengesIndustry composition
  • Figures from the DESA/UNSD, United Nations Comtrade database show that India exported nearly $3.5 billion worth of leather and steel articles, blouses, shirts, headwear, glassware, clock, and stationery.

  • About 68 percent of the export value came from articles of leather.
  • Popular corporate gifts include leather journals, steel mugs, computer accessories and tabletop items.
  • Access to raw materials such as leather, paper, cotton and wood is one of the main advantages of suppliers.

  • Events organized by trade associations help boost exports.

  • Another advantage of India's corporate gifts sector is its access to a large labor force.

  • Topping the list of suppliers' concerns is the upward trend in raw material costs.
  • Finding and retaining skilled labor is a challenge for some producers.
  • Companies find it difficult to compete with counterparts in neighboring hubs in terms of price.

  • Small makers typically have up to 10 workers.

  • Manufacturers with larger workforces and factories usually produce more than 20,000 pieces monthly.

  • Membership of the Corporate Gifts Association of India (CGAI) indicates the country has more than 200 companies focusing on corporate gifts.

The India corporate gifts industry is a diverse sector offering a wide range of products, including desktop accessories, stationery, promotional items and leather goods, which are covered in this report. Machine-made and handcrafted models can be sourced from the country.

In 2017, India sent abroad nearly $3.5 billion worth of these products, according to figures from the DESA/UNSD, United Nations Comtrade database. This represents an increase of about 3 percent from 2016. The data covers leather and steel articles, blouses, shirts, headwear, glassware, clocks, and stationery such as pens, diaries and notebooks.

About 68 percent of the export value came from articles of leather. Stainless steel articles for kitchen, table and household use, and shirts for boys and men each contributed nearly 10 percent.

Competitive advantages

India corporate gifts suppliers have domestic access to various raw materials, including leather, paper, cotton and wood. This enables them to produce a wide range of items that can be given as rewards and incentives to employees and clients.

The country is home to about 20 percent of the global cattle population and 11 percent of the goat and sheep population, according to the website of the Council for Leather Exports, making it one of the world’s key sources of leather. It is also a major producer of cotton, jute and other types of fiber.

For paper, India has about 600 paper mills, which offers printing, packaging and other types of paper. The sector produced about 20.37 million tonnes during the financial year 2017-2018, and output is expected to reach 25 billion by 2020, The Times of India reported, citing the Associated Chambers of Commerce and Industry of India.

India Corporate gifts Industry Overview Supplier Exports

The country is also home to various timber species. Teak, sal, oak, ebony, mango and sheesham wood, for instance, can be procured from the states of Assam, Jammu, Kashmir, Kerala and Uttar Pradesh.

Another advantage of the corporate gifts sector is its access to a large pool of workers, including various artisans. Uttar Pradesh has over 2 million artisans, or 29 percent of the total artisans in India, according to the Uttar Pradesh: State Development Report (2014). The Gujarat-Rajastahan cluster is home to 13 percent, and eastern India has 43 percent.

Various events highlighting personal and corporate gifts are held in the country, allowing local suppliers to showcase their products. The Gifts & Accessories magazine and the Indian Giftware and Houseware Association (IGHA) organizes events showcasing corporate gifts, stationery, houseware and kitchenware. The 2018 edition of their Corporate Gifts Show attracted 19,638 visitors.

Challenges

Rising raw material costs is one of the main concerns of the industry.

Paper prices, for one, are on an upward trend due to increases in raw material costs. Paper-making pulp went up to $780 per tonne in January from $650 per tonne approximately three months before, the Business Standard reported Jan. 20, 2018.

Price competition with suppliers in neighboring countries is also another concern. Quotes of products from India are often 20 to 50 percent more expensive compared with those from China and South Korea.

A number of companies have also mentioned difficulty in finding and retaining skilled labor. Makers are investing in in-house training to ensure their workers are skilled, but some workers leave after training to receive better wages.

Industry composition

Membership of the Corporate Gifts Association of India (CGAI) indicates the country has more than 200 suppliers specializing in corporate gifts.

Small makers typically have up to 10 workers. Occupying 200 to 500sqm, these factories usually produce no more than 5,000 pieces monthly. Annual sales of these companies do not exceed $72,000.

Midsize companies usually have fewer than 50 employees and have factories of up to 1,000sqm. These enterprises typically roll out about 8,000 pieces each month, generating up to $143,000 in annual sales.

Manufacturers with larger workforces and factories usually produce more than 20,000 pieces monthly. Yearly sales of these companies can exceed $286,000.

Materials & designs

Stationery, desktop items, garments and accessories are some of the corporate gifts exported from India. Models come in a wide range of materials, the bulk of which is sourced domestically.

Leather used in journals, planners and other desktop items is often sourced from Tamil Nadu, the largest leather-producing state in India. Chennai, Ambur, Ranipet, Vaniyambadi, Vellore, Trichy, Dindigul and Erode are among the main sources within the state.

Cotton is the preferred material for promotional shirts, caps and tote bags. The fabric typically comes from states of Gujarat, Maharashtra, Andhra Pradesh, Telangana, Haryana, Karnataka and Madhya Pradesh.

Wood and metal are common in traditional gifts such as paper weights, table clocks, pen holders and key chains. India’s natural resources include 64 million hectares of forested cover. Among the timber species that can be harvested from the country’s forests are sal, teak and acacia. Products showcasing traditional designs are typically in these types of wood.

When it comes to metal, India is the third largest producer of crude steel, generating 101.4 million tons in 2017, according to a report by The Economic Times dated Jan. 29, 2018.

Plastic is often sourced from the states of Gujarat and Tamil Nadu, the leading processing hubs of this material. Long fiber-reinforced thermoplastics – or fibers that can trap infrared radiations – and packaging that can increase the shelf life of products are new trends that have found their way into the use of plastic as a manufacturing material.

Designs of corporate gifts have been leaning more toward personalized styles. Design ideas range from basic to contemporary, giving clients a wide variety of choices.

Developments in technology are enabling innovations in the production of corporate items. Manufacturers and designers now use software and electronic equipment to make prints and patterns on garments, mugs, desktop items and electronic products.

Manufacturing & QC

Production of most corporate gift items are generally mechanized, including for table clocks, key chains, calendars, and pens. Handcrafted designs are the norm for leather diaries and metal mugs.

A typical medium-scale manufacturer has eight to 10 employees, including personnel for quality control and design. On average, they produce more than 3,000 pieces of corporate gift products monthly.

Suppliers typically follow ISO 9001:2008 and SA 8000 guidelines. Production personnel usually carry out an initial inspection to look for any potential flaws in materials, schedules and other resources. Another check is carried out during production to identify any issues early in the manufacturing cycle. There is also a pre-shipment inspection to ensure that items to be sent to the client meets specifications.

Pricing

Prices are determined primarily by raw materials costs, according to interviewed suppliers. Quotes for electronic items such as pen drives and headphones have gone down in recent years, while those for garments and mugs have gone up.

India Corporate gifts Survey Export Prices

Export sales & markets

Overall, India corporate gift makers are optimistic export sales will grow in the next 12 months. These companies are anticipating that promotions on online business-to-business (B2B) platforms and other marketing efforts will lead to new or additional orders.

Thirty-six of the companies featured in this report expect increases of up to 20 percent, and the same percentage see higher growth. The remaining respondents are projecting that export sales will remain flat year over year.

Forty-six percent of the surveyed suppliers cited North America as their most important target market in coming months, primarily because it is already their largest market. The rest of the respondents will focus on the Middle East, the EU and the Asia-Pacific region.

Corporate gifts with simple and clean designs are expected to increase in line with makers’ efforts to reach a wider market. The selection of items featuring traditional motifs, however, will continue to expand since several makers have existing buyers that prefer these models.

India corporate gifts Supplier Survey Export Forecast

Seven percent will be exploring combinations of raw materials such as pairing leather and jute to create interesting textures.

For 7 percent of the featured companies, improving product durability will be the top target of product development. Suppliers offering wooden tabletop products, for instance, will use mahogany instead of axle wood in pen holders and clocks because the former is more durable.

Challenges

Several surveyed suppliers cited difficulty in finding skilled labor as their main concern, particularly in the manufacture of garments, stationery and desktop items. Skilled workers are becoming scarce due to the lack of vocational training. Consequently, companies have to invest in training workers to keep production going.

Twenty percent of the featured companies see price competition as their primary difficulty, with counterparts in Bangladesh, Vietnam, Indonesia and China offering similar items. Additionally, SMEs have to compete with large manufacturers, which have the economies of scale to offer lower prices.

India corporate gifts Supplier Survey Key Findings

Entering new markets is also a challenge, especially for SMEs, which have limited resources to invest in market research, product development and promotion.

Interviewed companies intend to find new clients by improving their marketing strategies. Efforts include increasing their presence on B2B platforms and other e-commerce sites.
