Indonesia's fashion accessories & jewelry exportsCompetitive advantagesChallengesIndustry composition
  • Indonesia's 2017 exports of leather bags, metal jewelry and footwear amounted to more than $7.9 billion.

  • The US was the top importer of footwear and leather bags from the country.

  • For metal jewelry and parts, Switzerland accounted for the majority of export sales.
  • Indonesia has an abundance of raw materials such as leather and fabrics.

  • Indonesia is also a signatory of various multilateral and bilateral trade deals that reduce tariff barriers and facilitate exports.

  • The government offers training programs to enhance the capabilities of craftsmen and other workers in the footwear sector.
  • Intense price competition locally and in the international arena is a major challenge.

  • Stricter products standards necessitate testing and certification to meet these requirements, which are costly and can push prices up.

  • Labor-related expenses are on an upward trend.
  • Indonesia has more than 1,000 suppliers of fashion accessories.

  • SMEs make up the majority of the industry.

  • Most suppliers of silver fashion jewelry operate in Bali; leather goods makers are usually located in Jakarta, West Java, Central Java and Yogyakarta.

Indonesia’s fashion accessories & jewelry sector offers a wide range of products. The country’s exports include bags, wallets and footwear made of leather and fabrics; and fine and costume jewelry made of silver, copper, brass or stainless steel.

Export statistics

In 2017, Indonesia’s exports of articles of leather such as handbags, satchels, suitcases, briefcases and other containers under the HS code 4202 amounted to $363.2 million. This figure is extracted from the database of DESA/UNSD, United Nations Comtrade. It represents an increase of 36 percent compared to $266.9 million in 2016.

Nearly 40 percent of Indonesia’s exports in the line were shipped to the US, while 12 percent went to Belgium. Other major trading partners for leather bags in 2017 were Japan, the Netherlands, Germany and China.

Indonesia is one of the world’s top exporters of footwear. Statistics from the DESA/UNSD, United Nations Comtrade database, show that the country sent overseas more than $4.9 billion worth of footwear and related parts in 2017, up 6% from the previous year’s $4.6 billion.

The US accounted for $1.3 billion or 27 percent of Indonesia’s 2017 export value in the line. The other key destinations were China, Belgium, Germany, Japan and the UK, which imported footwear worth a total of $1.7 billion, accounting for 36 percent of overseas sales.

For metal jewelry and related parts, Indonesia exported $2.6 billion worth of items in 2017. Switzerland was the biggest trading partner accounting for 41 percent of exports, followed by Singapore at 30 percent and China at 14 percent.

Competitive advantages

Having domestic sources of raw materials such as fabrics and leather, and the local availability of studs, zips, tassels and other accessories allow suppliers to innovate design more frequently. Indonesia also has an abundance of hides, skins and other inputs that can be used to make bags, wallets and shoes, a factor that helps suppliers keep quotes competitive.

Over the past year, the cost of cowhide and snake- and crocodile skin has remained stable, according to interviewed suppliers. Studs, zips, tassels and other accessories, which are usually also sourced locally, have become less expensive.

Another factor helping exports grow is that Indonesia is a signatory of various multilateral and bilateral free trade agreements (FTAs). In 2018, the government set up FTA centers in Jakarta, Surabaya, Medan, Bandung and Makassar to provide information about the country’s various FTAs and how to utilize them.

The FTA Centers are operated by the Ministry of Trade’s Directorate General of International Trade Negotiations, in cooperation with several state universities. Each FTA Center has a team of three consultants who provide expertise in international trade agreements, financing and export procedures, and promotional and marketing strategies.

Government initiatives to promote its fashion accessories and jewelry industry include ensuring there is a supply of skilled labor for the sector. Through the Indonesian Footwear Industry Development Center (BPIPI), for instance, the government offers training programs to enhance the capabilities of craftsmen and other workers.

Challenges

Makers face intense price competition in the domestic and international market. Their main competitors are suppliers in China and Vietnam, which are also among the world’s major fashion accessories and footwear producers.

Exporters also need to contend with strict regulations in importing countries. Sellers are often required to cover the costs of certifying exports as eco-friendly. The additional cost is passed on to importers in the form of higher prices. Some companies cut costs by partnering with overseas buyers who are willing to process the requirements for international trade standards.

Inflation and other potential economic crises may also hinder the growth of the exports sector. Amid the rising cost of materials, increase in tariffs, or a decline in overseas demand, exporters are forced to adjust the prices of their products.

Minimum wages and other labor-related expenses, for one, are on an upward trend. Minimum monthly rates are expected to go up by about 8 percent in 2019.

Many exporters have been able to expand their export markets because of the strengthening value of the dollar.

Manufacturers that retained the price of their products were able to maintain their profit margin because of the lower cost of imported materials. These companies also had the option of slashing prices and increasing sales volumes.

Industry composition

Indonesia has thousands of suppliers of fashion accessories and jewelry, most of which are SMEs operating in Bali and in East, West and Central Java, and on the island of Nusa Tenggara.

Most small enterprises employ five to 20 workers and operate in factories with an area less than 50sqm. Typical monthly capacity is 100 to 1,000 pieces and annual revenue is below $100,000.

Midsize companies register export sales of around $300,000 per year and produce 5,000 pieces of assorted items per month. They scale up production with up to 100 employees working in 100 to 200sqm facilities.

Larger enterprises exceed $800,000 in annual export sales by offering over 10,000 pieces monthly made from a variety of materials, including natural elements. They enlist a workforce of more than 100 employees. Production takes place in 500-plus sqm facilities.

  • For jewelry, high-end pieces are typically in sterling silver, copper or brass and often feature more decorative elements and intricate details.

Materials

Indonesia suppliers offer fashion accessories and jewelry in a variety of materials, designs and construction.

For bags, satchels, totes, messenger bags, backpacks and evening designs dominate output in the line. As for wallets, suppliers provide bifolds, trifolds, wristlets and clutches as options. They feature artisanal detailing, or those with beading, chains and studs.

Models in a combination of materials and colors to suit various occasions are popular. Many recent releases are made of locally available materials from sustainable sources such as seagrass and rattan. Paper for decoupage are seen on some bags and clutches.

Design-wise, suppliers adapt to consumer behavior, which is mostly based on their lifestyle and activities. Commuters, for example, prefer simple bags with less detailing but with larger storage so they can carry more items while traveling. Buyers can expect to see more of such styles in 2019.

In the footwear sector, leather shoes for men and women remain popular because of their comfort and durability. Leather can be easily cut and shaped with comparable ease. It is also light, supple and breathable – characteristics that are very important for a good quality footwear. Genuine and synthetic leather are both used depending on the preference of buyers.

Casual and formal footwear such as pumps, sandals, flats and stilettos for women; and Oxford, loafers, sneakers and trainers for men are available in a wide range of designs.

Several suppliers especially those that are based in Central Java and Bali use fabrics such as suede, batik and painted canvas to make shoes.

In the fashion jewelry line, makers in Indonesia are mostly made of copper, brass, stainless steel and nickel silver. These are more economical that precious metals such as gold or silver. Brass, a highly durable material, is typically used for costume jewelry pieces. It does not easily corrode.

Ethnic and classic styles are on trend in coming months. More buyers are taking interest in designs that have a story or historical meaning behind them.

Manufacturing & QC

Handcrafted and machine-made fashion accessories undergo various checks from pre-production and raw materials preparation, to crafting, assembly and packaging. Most production steps are typically done in-house, unless orders exceed capacity.

In pre-production, all machines and handcrafting tools are checked to ensure that all parts are in good working order and that no errors can disrupt the production process. After this, incoming raw materials such as leather, fabrics and metal accessories are checked piece by piece. Imperfections may affect overall design and construction of finished products. All materials that pass the QC inspections are moved to the production area.

Depending on the fashion accessory or jewelry being assembled, there are different processes performed to ensure that the ones being manufactured are consistent with the master design.

Companies typically have a team of five workers who perform quality checks during production. The personnel are responsible for conducting a visual inspection of the size, color and detailing of each unit to ensure that client specifications are met. They also determine whether production facilities comply with manufacturing standards on machinery and environmental waste.

In practice, all items can be tailor-made to match buyers’ specifications, as long as tools and machines are available to carry out such customization requests. Some custom orders can also be mass produced, depending on the size and color of the item and the availability of the fabrics and other materials. The manufacturer may require a minimum order quantity based on the price and complexity of the product.

Pricing

The prices of bags and wallets are based primarily on their design and the materials used to create them. However, suppliers also consider currency exchange rates, changes in logistics costs and other market factors when determining product prices.

Simple handbags and tote bags made of synthetic leather typically cost less than $25. Those made of natural materials such as abaca, seagrass or rattan, and feature fabric lining and leather straps cost between $25 and $50. The same types of bags made of genuine leather, snakeskin or handmade fabric with silk or ethnic fabric lining cost more than $50 to $200 each.

Silver jewelry is typically priced based on types and amount of metal used, the latter of which is usually determined by weight. The complexity of the silver work and other design details push up quotes.

Models at the low end of the price range include silver-plated pieces or designs with only a minimal amount of sterling silver. Beads and other decorative elements are often made of seashells or resin.

Designs at the midrange are made of sterling silver. Models can be fitted with pearls, crystals or semiprecious stones, or feature engraved patterns.

High-end pieces use sterling silver and often feature more decorative elements and intricate details. Precious and semiprecious stones such as onyx and amethyst are common decorative elements.

Indonesia footwear prices range from $45 to $350 depending on the style and material.
