Vietnam Sourcing: Gifts & premiums 2017 Industry overview

Vietnam Sourcing: Gifts & premiums 2017

• Gifts & novelties • Stationery • Promotional items

This section discusses key issues affecting export manufacturers in Vietnam, offering insight into industry composition and important supply centers.

Vietnam's exports of gifts & premiumsCompetitive advantagesChallengesIndustry composition
  • In the first eight months of 2017, Vietnam exported about $5.8 billion worth of paper, wooden, ceramic, bamboo and rattan products.

  • Exports of handbags, purses, suitcases, headgear and umbrellas during the same period exceeded $2.2 billion.

  • Key destinations included the US, EU member countries, Japan, South Korea and China.
  • The country has a diverse pool of artisans, including weavers and lacquer artsts.

  • The variety of natural materials that can be sourced domestically is another advantage.

  • Suppliers also benefit from government and nongovernmental initiatives supporting exporters and SMEs.
  • Rising labor costs threaten the industry’s price competitiveness.

  • The need to comply with international standards is putting additional pressure on margins.

  • Price competition and rising costs leave SMEs limited funds to invest in product development and other marketing activities.
  • Small and midsize enterprises account for the majority of the industry.

  • Small companies employ fewer than 100 people.

  • Exporters usually have offices in the cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh

Vietnam’s diverse selection of gifts and premiums continues to expand as suppliers leverage their access to skilled artisans and diverse natural materials to create products featuring motifs from other countries, as well as the local culture. Products covered in this report include craft gifts and novelties, stationery, and promotional shirts, caps and bags.

Exports

Customs does not specifically track exports of gifts and premiums, but statistics for general product lines indicate that overseas sales are on an upward trend.

In the first eight months of 2017, the country sent abroad about $5.8 billion worth of paper, wooden, ceramic, bamboo and rattan products, according to preliminary data from the General Department of Customs, Ministry of Finance of Vietnam. This represents an increase of approximately 12 percent year over year.

Exports of handbags, purses, suitcases, headgear and umbrellas during the same period rose 5 percent year over year to exceed $2.2 billion. The value of textiles and garments sent abroad went up 8 percent year over year, reaching nearly $16.9 billion.

The major importers of the above-mentioned products included the US, Japan, South Korea, China and EU member countries.

Several suppliers expect sales to increase at double-digit rates this year, as they have received larger orders from existing customers in addition to those from new clients.

Competitive advantages

One of the factors that have propelled the growth of Vietnam’s gifts and premiums industry is the country’s diverse pool of artisans. Found within the country’s more than 1,500 traditional craft villages are skilled bamboo and rattan weavers, lacquer and pottery artists, and people capable of intricate embroidery.

Suppliers typically hire workers from these villages. A number of exporters also subcontract the manufacturing of noncore products to smaller factories in these villages.

The variety of natural materials that can be sourced domestically is another advantage of the industry. Clay, bamboo, rattan and seagrass are just among the locally sourced inputs used in the production of handcrafted fashion accessories, tableware and home decor.

Suppliers of gifts and premiums also benefit from government and nongovernmental initiatives supporting exporters and SMEs. At several exhibitions, for instance, booths can be sponsored partially by the government or associations.

Vietnam’s bilateral and multilateral trade agreements also support the growth of the gifts and premiums industry. These deals facilitate entry into overseas markets, as well as the importation of necessary inputs and equipment.

As a member of the ASEAN, it has signed free trade agreements (FTAs) with China, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, India and Japan. It also has bilateral FTAs with Japan, Chile and South Korea, all of which are in force.

Among the country’s more recent trade deals include those with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which took effect in October 2016. The EU-Vietnam FTA (EVFTA), negotiations of which concluded in 2015, is expected to take effect in 2018.

In June 2017, Vietnam’s National Assembly passed the Law on Support for Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises. Under the SME Law, which will take effect in 2018, qualified SMEs will be entitled to a lower corporate income tax rate and other incentives.

Challenges

Amid intense price competition in the industry, increases in production costs puts Vietnam products at a disadvantage compared with those from China and other low-cost hubs. Labor-related expenses, for one, have been on an upward trend in recent years.

Current minimum wages in Vietnam’s various regions are up more than 7.3 percent from 2016 levels. In 2018, rates are expected to increase an average of 6.5 percent, if the proposed wage increase is approved. This means increases in related expenses such as social and health insurance payments.

The necessity of complying with international standards is putting additional pressure on suppliers’ resources, as this means spending for product testing and certification, and staff training. More buyers are requiring suppliers in Vietnam to conform with international standards amid greater social awareness among consumers. Further, several buyers are requiring their suppliers to not only meet regulations governing products but those concerning social accountability and environmental management.

Besides pushing prices upward and threating price competitiveness, cost increases make it difficult for SMEs — with their limited financial resources — to attract buyers by offering longer payment terms.

To avoid engaging in direct price competition, some companies are investing in the development of differentiated products. Most suppliers, however, have limited funds to invest in market research, product development and promotional activities.

Industry composition

Small and midsize companies dominate Vietnam’s gifts and premiums industry, especially in the handicraft sector.

Companies turning out fewer than 25,000 pieces monthly are small operations. These suppliers have fewer than 100 permanent employees, and their factories are less than 2,000sqm. Annual sales of these manufacturers typically https://www.alotrip.com/about-vietnam-overview/mekong-river-delta-introductiondo not exceed $1.5 million.

Midsize companies can have up to 200 full-time workers, and their manufacturing facilities can cover up to 6,000sqm. These suppliers can produce up to 130,000 pieces each month, while their annual sales can reach $4 million.

Makers with larger workforces and factories can produce more than 130,000 pieces monthly, and their annual sales exceed $4 million.

For craft gifts, the Red River Delta, Mekong Delta, South Central Coast and the Southern regions of Vietnam are the main production hubs. Exporters usually have offices in the cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. A number have production facilities within these areas or in nearby locations.

Materials & designs

Vietnam suppliers offer a wide range of craft gifts, novelties, stationery and promotional items. Most add new designs to their selections monthly.

Across the various categories, many companies are expanding their selections of handcrafted designs. Demand for such products remain high, especially those made of natural and environment-friendly materials.

In terms of shapes, trims and embellishments, the trend is for designs that depict figures, landmarks and other elements popular in overseas markets. Recent releases also include designs with abstract or novelty structures, in contrast to traditional products that often depict floral and religious themes.

Gifts & novelties: Handcrafted figurines, vases and other home furnishings featuring a lacquer finish remain popular. These include articles made of bamboo, rattan, MDF and clay. For more information about the traditional lacquerware from Vietnam, click here.

Makers typically import MDF from China or Malaysia. For rattan products, makers source their requirements from the provinces of Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Bac Giang, Quang Ninh, Hoa Binh, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and Quang Tri.

Clay for ceramic products can be obtained from suppliers in Binh Duong, Quang Ninh, Hai Duong, Phu Tho, Yen Bai, Lao Cai, Hue and Da Lat provinces. Raw materials for the glaze, however, are often imported.

Handwoven bags are also popular offerings. These are usually made of palm leaves, bamboo, jute and other natural materials that are available locally. Seagrass, for instance, is obtained from the provinces of Tien Giang and Thanh Hoa. Bamboo is available in several provinces, including Hoa Binh and Thanh Hoa in the north.

Stationery: Stationery makers offer notebooks that are stitched, glued, stapled, ring-bound and spiral-bound designs. The inner sheets are usually made of paper ranging from 55 to 120gsm, while the cover is typically cardstock or hard cardboard. Journal notebooks and organizers with PU leather covers are also available.

Greeting cards for various occasions are also available from the sector. Models can also be customized to serve as promotional material. In terms of style, the selection includes aperture cards, pop-up types, and folded designs with quilled patterns.

Models are made of cardstock ranging from 180 to 250gsm. Many stationery manufacturers use imported paper and cardstock, usually from South Korea, Italy and Japan.

Mass-produced and handmade models may come with pop-up images, paper filigree, cutouts and other embellishments. Recent releases include pop-up cards featuring well-known landmarks such the Arc de Triomphe and Eiffel Tower in Paris, and the Honmyō-ji in Kumamoto, Japan.

Promotional items: Among the promotional items that can be sourced from Vietnam are ball caps, bags and shirts.

For ball caps, the selection includes fitted and adjustable designs with five or six panels. Models feature printed, embroidered or embossed logos or patterns.

Promotional bags are usually totes or drawstring types, but a number of suppliers also offer backpacks, cosmetic bags, cooler bags and other styles. T-shirts, meanwhile, remain the popular choice in terms of garments to be used as promotional items.

Cotton and polyester are popular raw material options across these product lines. Bag manufacturers also offer models in nylon, and nonwoven and woven PP.

Cotton canvas, as well as nonwoven and woven PP, are often procured from vendors in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh. For T-shirts, cotton and polyester textiles are sourced from suppliers in Vietnam or imported from mainland China, Taiwan and South Korea.

In line with the trend for eco-friendly designs, jute, palm leaves and bamboo are being adopted in promotional bags as well. Styles are typically simpler compared with versions that are positioned as fashion bags.

Manufacturing & QC

Among makers of lacquerware, a well-known type of craft gift from Vietnam, most create models made of wood, bamboo or MDF in-house. Formation of ceramic pieces, on the other hand, are typically subcontracted to small workshops specializing in the products but application of the lacquer is done in-house.

Polishing, stenciling of the artwork and painting of the lacquer are often done manually. Production can take more than 100 days depending on the complexity of the design, the size of the piece and the number of lacquer coatings. QC of lacquerware includes ensuring that the shape and color of the piece are correct, that there are no cracks and that the surface is smooth.

For greeting cards, cardstock is cut to specifications using laser-cutting machines. The card, the patterns and other components are then assembled by hand. Production of notebooks, on the other hand, is generally mechanized.

Similar, the creation of promotional textile products such as bags, ball caps and shirts is mechanized. Makers typically perform cutting, sewing, printing and embroidery using equipment from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan or South Korea.

Most processes are done in-house, although some companies subcontract sewing to other factories when they receive orders larger than their current capacity. Suppliers also sometimes subcontract the printing and embroidery of logos and other patterns if they do not specialize in such processes.

Manufacturing lead time for stationery and promotional items typically range from 30 to 45 days.

Products undergo quality checks during and after manufacturing, with specifications checked against buyer specifications. For many manufacturers, this means meeting EU’s EN 14362 standards for textiles and the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive. EU and US standards on toy safety are also among the guidelines typically followed.

Small and midsize companies usually have three to eight QC inspectors. A number of suppliers follow ISO 9001 guidelines. There are also large makers certified compliant with ISO 14001 and SA 8000.

Pricing

Prices vary based mainly on how labor-intensive production of the model is and the materials adopted. Quotes have generally remained stable in the past 12 months. Significant price adjustments are not expected in coming months since raw material costs are stable.

For gifts and novelties, polyresin figurines up to 60mm tall are widely available for less than $1. Models typically depict animals, people or religious figures.

Lacquered, handcrafted vases made of bamboo or ceramic that are up to 45cm in height go for less than $10. Taller and larger pieces with mother-of-pearl inlay are more expensive.

Handmade greeting cards featuring quilled paper or pop-up designs are offered for less than $2. Models for birthdays and other occasions are available.
