  • Suppliers also benefit from government and nongovernmental initiatives supporting exporters and SMEs.
  • Rising labor and raw material costs threaten the industry’s price competitiveness.

  • The need to comply with international standards is putting additional pressure on prices and margins.

  • Rising costs also make it difficult for SMEs with limited financial resources to offer longer payment terms.
  • SMEs make up the majority of the industry.

  • Small companies have fewer than 100 full-time workers.

  • Exporters usually have offices in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Vietnam’s diverse selection of gifts and premiums includes both handcrafted and mass-produced items. This report covers craft gifts and novelties, greeting cards, notebooks and promotion bags, shirts and caps.

Exports

Customs does not specifically track exports of gifts and premiums, but statistics for products associated with the industry indicate that overseas sales are on an upward trend.

Preliminary data from the General Department of Customs show that between January and August 2018, Vietnam shipped nearly $6.9 billion worth of paper, wooden, ceramic, bamboo and rattan products. This represents a year-over-year increase of nearly 18 percent. Exports of handbags, purses, suitcases, headgear and umbrellas during the same period inched up 0.5 percent year over year to exceed $2.2 billion.

The US, Japan, South Korea, China and EU member countries are among the major importers.

Interviewed suppliers expect to receive more orders in coming months. Export sales in 2019 are expected be up 5 to 10 percent compared with 2018.

Competitive advantages

A key factor enabling Vietnam suppliers to provide a diverse selection of gifts and premiums is the variety of natural materials that can be found in the country. Makers of ceramics in Binh Duong province, for instance, can source white and red clay locally.

Besides clay, bamboo, rattan, water hyacinth and seagrass can also be obtained from domestic suppliers.

Vietnam is also home to artisans of various skills. For handicrafts, the country has more than 1,500 traditional craft villages with skilled carvers, bamboo and rattan weavers, painters, and lacquer and pottery artists. Bat Trang village in Hanoi City, for one, is known for pottery.

Manufacturers typically hire workers from these villages. Several also subcontract certain production stages or noncore products to smaller factories in these villages.

Suppliers also benefit from government and nongovernmental initiatives supporting exporters and SMEs. The Ministry of Industry and Trade can sponsor up to 70 percent of the booth fee for exporters participating in Global Sources Exhibitions and other trade shows.

In Bac Ninh province, home to craft villages focused on pottery, weaving, bamboo products and other paper making, trade promotion programs include workforce training and production modernization.

Vietnam’s trade agreements provide makers another advantage, facilitating entry into overseas markets and making products less expensive. The trade deals often also include terms meant to reduce the cost of importing inputs and equipment. The country has signed 17 agreements, 10 of which are in effect.

Among the recent initiatives to support suppliers is the Law on Support for Small- and Medium-Sized Enterprises, which took effect 2018. Under this law, qualified SMEs can avail of tax deductions, credit and other incentives.

Challenges

Price competition in the gifts and premiums market is intense. Consequently, suppliers are concerned about any increase in production cost.

Regional minimum wage rates have continued to rise. Rates for 2018 are more than 6 percent higher compared with 2017 levels. Wage increases push up related expenses such as social and health insurance payments.

Raw material costs are also on an upward trend. In the past 12 months, makers using plant-based materials such as rattan, water hyacinth and seagrass have seen costs of these inputs go up by more than 10 percent.

Ensuring that their products meet internationally recognized standards is putting additional pressure on production costs and consequently, prices. Makers have to spend for product testing and certification as well as staff training. Further, several suppliers are upgrading production and management systems to not only meet guidelines on product quality and safety, but also those on social accountability and environmental management.

Besides pushing prices upward and threating price competitiveness, additional expenses make it difficult for SMEs — with their limited financial resources — to offer longer payment terms.

To raise the value of their products, some craft gift suppliers are investing in creating unique designs for contemporary consumers. Most companies, however, have limited funds to invest in market research, product development and promotional activities.

Industry composition

The industry is fragmented and there are no official statistics for the number of gifts and premiums suppliers in Vietnam. However, the country is home to thousands of handicraft suppliers, most of which can customize designs to buyers’ requirements.

Small and midsize companies constitute the majority of the industry. Makers operating on a small scale have fewer than 100 regular employees. These suppliers typically generate less than $1.6 million in annual sales.

At midsize companies, full-time workers do not exceed 200. These manufacturers usually record revenues of up to $4.5 million every year.

Most handicraft suppliers are located in the Red River and Mekong Delta regions, the South Central Coast and the Southeast region. Most exporters are based in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City.

Da Nang, Can Tho, Binh Duong, Ba Ria-Vung Tau and Dong Nai provinces are also key production hubs.

Materials & designs

Vietnam suppliers offer a wide range of gifts and premiums, and most companies update their selections monthly. The selection includes handcrafted home décor, wearables and accessories, tableware, greeting cards and stationery.

Across the various categories, “slow” goods or items that are handcrafted and often made of locally grown natural materials are on trend. Makers have seen demand for these products increasing amid rising social awareness among consumers.

Gifts & novelties: In gift items, this trend is reflected in lacquerware made of bamboo, rattan or clay. Glazed figurines, vases and other home furnishing in ceramic are also widely available.

Rattan is typically sourced from the provinces of Lao Cai, Yen Bai, Bac Giang, Quang Ninh, Hoa Binh, Nghe An, Ha Tinh, Quang Binh and Quang Tri. Bamboo can also be procured from various provinces, including Son La, Phu Tho, Nghe An, Lam Dong, Binh Thuan and Tay Ninh.

Clay is usually obtained from suppliers in Binh Duong, Quang Ninh, Hai Duong, Phu Tho, Yen Bai, Lao Cai, Hue and Da Lat provinces. Glaze materials, however, are often imported.

Wicker bags of various styles are also popular craft gifts. Options include shoulder bags, totes, sling bags, clutches and beach bags. For raw materials, choices include seagrass, water hyacinth, bamboo, jute and other natural materials that are available locally.

Stationery: Notebooks and greeting cards that use local handmade paper are available, but most adopt paper and cardstock imported from China, South Korea, Italy or Japan.

In terms of production, most notebooks are mass-produced. Stitched, glued, stapled, ring-bound and spiral-bound designs are widely available. The sheets are usually made of paper ranging from 55 to 120gsm, while the cover is cardstock or hard cardboard. Models with covers made of genuine or PU leather are also available.

For greeting cards, cutting is usually mechanized. Assembly of the cardstock and its embellishments, however, is usually done by hand. Cardstock ranging from 180 to 250gsm is typically used.

Designs for various occasions are available, and cards can also be customized to serve as promotional material. Various styles are offered, including aperture cards, pop-up types and quilling cards.

Promotional items: As commercial establishments and shoppers move away from disposable plastic packaging, reusable bags made of fabric or PP are popular promotional items. Style-wise, the selection consists mostly of drawstring bags and totes, but backpacks, cosmetic bags, cooler bags and other types are also offered.

Cotton, polyester, nylon, and nonwoven and woven PP are the options in terms of materials. These are typically procured from suppliers in Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh City. In line with the trend for eco-friendly designs, makers are also adopting jute, palm leaves and bamboo.

Ball caps and shirts are also common promotional products. Fitted and adjustable ball caps with five or six panels are widely available. For shirts, T-shirts remain the popular choice.

Cotton and polyester fabrics for caps and shirts are typically sourced from local suppliers or imported from mainland China, Taiwan and South Korea.

Manufacturing & QC

Gifts and premiums made of natural materials are typically handcrafted and therefore labor-intensive to create.

Makers of lacquerware that use wood, bamboo or MDF as the base material typically keep manufacturing in-house. Those offering lacquered ceramic pieces usually subcontract creation of the base products to small workshops, but application of the lacquer is done in-house.

Polishing, stenciling of the artwork and painting of the lacquer are typically done manually. Quality checks on lacquerware include ensuring that the size, shape and color of the piece are correct and that there are no unwanted cracks.

Due to the labor-intensive nature of the process, lacquerware production can take more than 100 days depending on the complexity of the design, the size of the piece and the number of lacquer coatings.

For stationery and promotional items, the manufacturing lead time ranges from 30 to 45 days since many steps are done by machines.

In the production of greeting cards, cardstock is cut to specifications using laser-cutting equipment. The card, the patterns and other components are then assembled by hand. Notebook production, on the other hand, is generally mechanized.

For textile products such as bags, ball caps and shirts, machines are typically used for cutting, sewing, printing and embroidery. These facilities are usually imported from mainland China, Taiwan, Japan or South Korea.

Most processes are done in-house, although some manufacturers subcontract sewing to other factories when orders exceed current capacity. Printing and embroidery of logos and other patterns may also be subcontracted.

Small and midsize operations usually have three to eight QC inspectors. Both mass-produced and handcrafted items undergo quality checks at various production stages, with specifications usually checked against buyer specifications. This typically means meeting internationally recognized standards such as the EU’s EN 14362 requirements for textiles and the Restriction of Hazardous Substances (RoHS) Directive. EU and US standards on toys and other children’s products are also among the guidelines often followed. Several suppliers follow ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and SA 8000 guidelines.

Pricing

Product prices depend mainly on the materials used and how labor-intensive the items are to make.

Quotes for products made of natural materials are on an upward trend due to the higher cost of manufacturing inputs. Items made of rattan, water hyacinth and seagrass, for instance, are expected to become 10 to 20 percent more expensive.

Prices of other gifts and premiums are projected to remain stable.
