Vietnam Sourcing: Home decor 2017 Industry overview
Vietnam Sourcing: Home decor 2017
• Home accessories • Vases & pottery • Garden ornaments
This section discusses key issues affecting export manufacturers in Vietnam, offering insight into industry composition and important supply centers.
|Vietnam home decor exports||Competitive advantages||Challenges||Industry composition|
To grow their businesses, Vietnam suppliers of handcrafted home decor and other handicrafts are improving their products and operations as international standards on quality and corporate social responsibility become more stringent. Makers of handcrafted items, which compete mainly in the midrange and high-end segments, are encountering more buyers requiring them to conform with international standards amid greater social awareness and concerns about safety and the environment among consumers.
Home decor suppliers’ efforts in line with this strategy include having their products certified compliant with internationally recognized standards such as those of ASTM International and the US Food and Drug Administration. At some midsize and large producers, ISO 9001 and 14000 and SA 8000:2001 standards are also being followed.
Efforts to meet internationally recognized standards, along with the opportunities presented by the various trade agreements that Vietnam has entered, are expected to open up more markets for the industry and boost exports. To ensure this, some suppliers are joining business-to-business trade shows held locally and overseas.
LC Home, a supplier of ceramics, plans to expand its customer base in the US, Japan, Australia and the EU. Viet Vision intends to join international trade shows in line with efforts to attract buyers from Sweden, Norway, Denmark, France and Germany.
Ngoc Dong Ha Nam plans to boost exports to China, South Korea and Europe. Besides joining trade shows, the company advertises on Google and B2B online marketing platforms.
There are no specific statistics for home decor exports. The value of bamboo, rattan, ceramic, wood and wooden products sent abroad, however, amounted to $7.66 billion in 2016, according to preliminary data from the General Depart of Customs, Ministry of Finance of Vietnam.
Of the total export value, wood and wooden items accounted for nearly $6.97 billion, or over 90 percent. Approximately $430.9 million came from ceramics, while $262.9 million were from bamboo and rattan products.
The US was the top export destination with products sent to that market generating nearly $3 billion, according to data from the General Statistics Office of Vietnam. Japan, South Korea and EU member countries were the other major overseas destinations.
A key factor supporting the home decor sector’s efforts to grow exports of handcrafted designs is its access to a large pool of artisans with various skills. Vietnam is home to more than 1,700 craft villages, many of which can be found in the Mekong Delta and Red River Delta regions.
Home decor makers typically hire their workers from these villages. Those offering lacquered ceramics often subcontract the manufacturing of the core product to makers in these villages.
Suppliers also benefit from having relatively competitive labor costs compared with other production hubs in Asia. Monthly rates in the home decor industry range from $175 to $263, according to interviewed suppliers.
Domestic availability of most raw materials is another advantage of Vietnam’s home decor industry. Bamboo and rattan, as well as various species of wood, can be sourced within the country. Brass and other types of metal can be acquired from Ho Chi Minh City and several provinces.
Suppliers offering handcrafted home furnishings also benefit from government and private sector initiatives supporting the handicraft sector.
The Vietnam Handicraft Exporters Association, for example, organizes trainings and provides consultancy services to help exporters comply with international standards.
The Binh Duong Lacquer and Sculpture Association, in cooperation with the Department of Industry and Trade, helps its members join local and international trade shows. The Hanoi Lacquerware Association, together with the Department of Industry and Trade, organizes training sessions for members and their workers to improve their skills and knowledge in lacquerware production.
Having limited funds for investing in market research and product development is a key challenge for Vietnam home decor suppliers, most of which are SMEs.
The need to comply with international standards is putting additional pressure on suppliers’ resources, as this entails spending for product testing and certification, as well as staff training. Having a factory certified compliant with ISO standards, for instance, can cost $4,300 to $5,300. Chemical testing for lead and formaldehyde levels means an expense of $300 to $500 per sample.
With their limited financial resources, SMEs are unable to offer longer payment terms to attract more buyers. Competing for low-value, high-volume orders is also difficult.
Higher production costs are cutting further into their financial resources since they are wary of raising prices and losing orders. Makers of ceramic products, for one, have seen operating expenses increase by as much as 30 percent from 2016 levels.
Labor-related expenses are also on the rise. Home decor makers are offering better wages and benefits to retain and attract skilled personnel as workers look for better-paying jobs to cover the increasing cost of living in Vietnam. A few companies with the financial resources to do so have mechanized more steps to reduce labor costs, as well as production lead times.
Home decor suppliers in Vietnam are mostly SMEs belonging to the handicraft sector. Makers of wooden, bamboo, rattan and ceramic items can be found in the country’s more than 1,700 craft villages.
Small enterprises, which have no more than 50 full-time workers, operate factories covering 300 to 6,000sqm. Capable of producing 16,000 pieces each month, these suppliers generate annual sales ranging from $250,000 to $1.5 million.
Midsize companies have 50 to 70 full-time employees and their factories cover at least 10,000sqm. With a monthly capacity ranging from 16,000 to 140,000 pieces, their annual sales can reach $3.5 million.
Supplier with larger workforces and factories can roll out more than 140,000 pieces each month. Annual sales at these companies can reach $11 million.
Makers of bamboo, rattan and sedge handicrafts congregate in the provinces of Ha Tay, Ha Nam, Thai Binh, Thanh Hoa, Khanh Hoa and Tien Giang. For handcrafted wooden products, Hanoi, and Hai Duong, Bac Ninh, Nam Dinh and Ha Tay provinces are the centers of manufacturing.
Bat Trang village in Hanoi is one of the areas known for ceramics. Other villages known for pottery production are Phu Lang in Bac Ninh province, Huong Canh in Vinh Phuc, Lo Chum in Thanh Hoa, Thanh Ha in Quang Nam and Bien Hoa in Dong Nai.

Materials & designs
Vietnam home decor makers use a wide range of natural and synthetic materials. Most manufacturing inputs are acquired domestically, with only about 20 percent sourced abroad.
Rattan, for example, is available in various parts of the country, including the provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Quang Tri, Yen Bai and Son La in the north. Makers also source from Lam Dong in the central highlands and Quang Nam in the south.
Bamboo, meanwhile, is often procured from the northern provinces of Thanh Hoa, Nghe An, Nam Dinh and Bac Ninh.
Clay for ceramic and porcelain home accessories is typically sourced from Hanoi City and the provinces of Lao Cai and Quang Ninh in the north, and Binh Duong, Kien Giang and Vinh Long in the south.
Iron and brass for figurines and candle holders are acquired from metallurgy companies in the cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh, and the provinces of Lao Cai, Dong Nai and Thai Nguyen.
Mother-of-pearl, a popular embellishment in home decor, is acquired from Vietnam’s northeastern region. For silver and gold leaves, and eggshells, Hanoi is the main source.
In terms of finishes, natural lacquer is sourced from Phu Tho province. PU paint is bought in the cities of Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi.
Imported manufacturing inputs, meanwhile, include the glaze for ceramic pieces, which is typically from China. MDF is often acquired from China and Malaysia.
Design-wise, the selection for buyers comprises models featuring traditional and modern themes. Models that are purely decorative items such as paintings and figurines are offered, as well as products that are both decorative and functional.
Amid efforts to boost exports, the number of pieces in the latter category is increasing. Releases include ceramic tableware such as tea sets, plates and bowls that meet the US FDA or Germany’s LFGB standards.
Green, blue, brown and other colors associated with nature are popular. Models for the EU, however, often come in black, white or silver.
Home decor suppliers have three to five people in R&D, including designers. Some big lacquerware companies have as many as five designers with a background in fine arts. People involved in product development keep up to date with markets mainly through online research, trade shows and their work with buyers from different markets.
Products covered by OEM contracts account for at least 40 percent of sales in the various home decor categories. Models released under in-house brands generally account for less than 20 percent of revenue, but there are a few midsize and large companies where these are the primary source of business.
Makers can generally customize products to buyers’ requirements, including the design, core material and finish. Companies can provide samples in 15 to 45 days depending on the type of product.
Manufacturing & QC
The production of home decor in Vietnam typically involves several steps that have to be done manually, either in-house or by a subcontractor.
Suppliers offering lacquered home decor typically create pieces with wooden and MDF cores in their own workshops. Ceramic pieces, however, are often outsourced but the application of the lacquer is done in-house.
In production, polishing, stenciling of the artwork and painting of the lacquer are often done by hand. Depending on the complexity of the design, its size and the number of lacquer coatings that need to be applied, production can take more than 100 days.
For suppliers of ceramic vases and tableware, most manufacturing process are done in-house. At small and midsize makers, production is done mostly by hand or using cutting tools and simple machines turntables. Some large manufacturers, on the other hand, employ machines for mixing, casting and glazing.
QC is conducted at every production stage to ensure that the product is formed to specifications and do not have any cracks. The smoothness, thickness and color of the glaze is also checked. QC is primarily conducted by sight and touch.
Some midsize and large companies comply with ISO 9001 and 14000 standards. A number also follow SA 8000:2001 requirements.
Most handcrafted home decor from Vietnam are positioned as midrange or high-end products. In the various categories, the main price determinants are the raw materials used and the complexity of the design. The more labor-intensive the process is, the higher the quote. Size and packaging, as well as the documentation required for the products, also affect pricing.
In the next 12 to 24 months, several companies will be keeping prices at current levels for products covered by contracts.
Buyers looking for home accents can find 12x28cm lacquered MDF candlesticks below $10. Between $10 and $20, 80x80x3cm mirrors with lacquered MDF frames featuring mother-of-pearl inlay are available.
Higher up the price range are larger home accessories that often entail manufacturing steps done by hand. The price for a 34x34cm resin or wooden sculpture of a monkey, for example, can exceed $25.
Among indoor vases, 20x12x15cm bamboo designs go for up to $4 each. Lacquered MDF or ceramic models with mother-of-pearl inlay are offered between $5 and $15 per piece, while three-piece fiberglass or wooden sets with a lacquer finish can exceed $25 per set.
For gardens and outdoor areas, three-piece planter sets made of concrete and ceramic planter are widely available for less than $25. Lacquered fiberglass models 50cm or taller exceed $40.
A 75cm ceramic statue depicting a girl with a water jug is available for $25 or less. A handcarved marble angel figure measuring 120 to 180cm tall goes for more than $1,000.
