Vietnam tableware exportsCompetitive advantagesChallengesIndustry composition
  • Vietnam exported nearly $262.8 million worth of bamboo and rattan products in 2016, including tableware.

  • The value of ceramic products sent abroad in 2016 exceeded $430.6 million.

  • Suppliers are optimistic export sales will increase at double-digit levels in the next 12 months.
  • Vietnam has an estimated 1,500 craft villages, which is home to carvers, weavers and other artisans.

  • The domestic availability of various natural materials is also an advantage of the sector.

  • The free trade agreements that Vietnam has entered into facilitate exports and foreign investment in the industry.
  • Rising production costs is a major hurdle to export growth, as this threatens the price competitiveness of Vietnam products.

  • Makers have chosen to absorb increases in production costs instead of raising quotes, cutting margins by up to 20 percent.

  • Suppliers are replacing costly production inputs with less-expensive alternatives.
  • Most tableware suppliers belong to the handicraft industry.

  • Vietnam is home to over 700 craft villages that produce bamboo and rattan products.

  • The country has more than 1,000 makers of ceramic items.

Vietnam tableware suppliers are releasing more mixed-media products and innovative designs under efforts to differentiate their products and keep prices competitive.

Makers are taking advantage of the internet to reach more markets, creating their own websites or promoting their products on business-to-business platforms. In addition, a number are participating in trade shows to connect with target buyers.

Through these efforts, interviewed suppliers are optimistic of seeing export sales increase 10 to 30 percent in the next 12 months. Companies see demand from the US, Japan, South Korea and the EU, their main markets, remaining on an uptrend.

Exports

Vietnam does not have specific export statistics for tableware, but data from the General Department of Customs, Ministry of Vietnam, show that the country exported nearly $262.8 million of bamboo and rattan products in 2016. The value of ceramic products sent abroad exceeded $430.6 million.

According to the General Statistics Office of Vietnam, the US absorbed approximately $115.8 million worth of the ceramic, bamboo and rattan products that the country sent abroad. The other major markets were Japan, Taiwan, Germany and the UK.

Statistics from DESA/UNSD, United Nations Comtrade database, show that the country sent abroad nearly $6.5 million worth of porcelain table, kitchen, household and toilet items under HS code 6911 in 2015. This represented an increase of 6 percent from the previous year.

The UK and the Netherlands were the top markets, accounting for $2.4 million and $1.1 million, respectively.

Exports of glassware for table, kitchen, toilet and decoration under HS code 7013 exceeded $19.8 million in 2015, down 17 percent from the previous period. South Korea topped the list of destinations, accounting for $4.2 million of the export value. Exports to China generated nearly $3.7 million and products sent to Japan amounted to about $2.7 million.

For wooden tableware and kitchenware under HS code 4419, the value of products sent abroad in 2015 reached approximately $38.7 million, up 8 percent from 2014. Japan was the top market, accounting for nearly $14.5 million of the export value. The other major markets were South Korea and the US, accounting for about $7.8 million and $4.4 million, respectively.

Competitive advantages

Skilled artisans and the domestic availability of various materials enable Vietnam’s tableware industry to produce a wide range of handcrafted designs.

Vietnam has an estimated 1,500 craft villages, including those producing wicker products, ceramics and wooden items. These villages are home to carvers, weavers and other skilled artisans whose techniques have been passed down from previous generations.

Rattan, bamboo and other natural materials used in handcrafted tableware can be found domestically. Rattan can be procured from provinces in northeastern, north-central and central Vietnam. Bamboo can be sourced from several provinces in the northern, southern and central parts of the country, while water hyacinth comes mainly from the Mekong Delta region.

The free trade agreements (FTAs) that Vietnam has entered into also benefit the tableware industry, facilitating exports and foreign investment in the sector. The Vietnam-Eurasian Economic Union FTA, which took effect in 2016, cuts tariffs on 90 percent of all goods traded between the two economies, including ceramic and wooden products. It opens a market with about 180 million consumers to Vietnam businesses.

Under the Vietnam-EU FTA, expected to enter into force in 2018, nearly all tariffs traded between the two economies will be eliminated.

Challenges

Rising production costs is a major hurdle to export growth, as this threatens the price competitiveness of Vietnam products.

Makers of ceramic tableware, for instance, have seen clay and glaze become 10 percent more expensive in the past 12 months. The rates for bamboo and rattan have similarly risen, while the cost of water hyacinth has gone up 50 percent.

Labor-related expenses are also on the rise. Besides increases in minimum wages mandated by the government, suppliers are offering better salaries to attract and retain workers, who may otherwise opt to move to other industries that can provide higher and more stable pay.

Keen to keep prices competitive, makers have chosen to absorb increases in production costs instead of raising quotes, cutting their profits by 10 to 20 percent. Consequently, suppliers have limited funds to invest in production upgrades, product development and marketing.

To minimize the effect of higher production costs on margins and prices, suppliers are replacing costly production inputs with less-expensive alternatives.

In line with this trend, and to differentiate their designs, companies are offering products combining two or more materials. The latest releases include wicker trays with a machine-pressed bamboo base instead of woven water hyacinth or rattan, which is more labor-intensive and therefore costly.

Tableware makers are also investing in machines to facilitate certain processes. Those offering ceramic models, for instance, are adopting gas-fired kilns in place of furnaces that run on straw or wood. In finishing, sanding machines are being used.

In pricing, suppliers are factoring in fluctuations in production costs since sales agreements call for prices to remain the same for one to two years.

Industry composition

Vietnam’s tableware suppliers are mostly suppliers belonging to the handicraft industry.

Bamboo & rattan items: The country has more than 700 craft villages that create bamboo and rattan handicrafts. The sector consists of SMEs that employ no more than 100 full-time workers.

Small operations have 10 to 30 full-time staff and their factories cover up to 500sqm. They can produce fewer than 30,000 pieces monthly and their annual export sales do not exceed $1 million.

Midsize companies employ up to 100 full-time workers, while their facilities range from 1,000 to 12,000sqm. Capable of producing up to 100,000 pieces each month, they can generate between $1 million and $3 million annually in export sales.

In the north, the provinces of Hanoi, Ha Nam, Nam Dinh, Thai Binh, Thanh Hoa, Bac Ninh and Phu Tho are the key manufacturing centers for bamboo and rattan tableware. In the south, Ho Chi Minh City and the provinces of Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Khanh Hoa and Tien Giang are main production hubs.

Ceramic items: The country is home to more than 1,000 makers of ceramic items.

The supplier base consists mainly of small workshops that produce no more than 10,000 pieces each month. With 50 to 100 employees and facilities that occupy less than 10,000sqm, these organizations generate between $200,000 and $500,000 annually.

Companies with larger factories and workforces can produce up to 50,000 pieces per month and their yearly revenue exceeds $500,000.

Well-known sources of ceramic products in Vietnam include Bat Trang village in Hanoi City, and the provinces of Binh Duong, Bac Ninh and Hai Duong.

Materials & designs

Vietnam suppliers offer tableware in various natural materials, which are usually sourced domestically.

Spun bamboo is a common option for dinner plates, serving trays and tabletop accessories such as placemats and runners. The material is typically procured from the provinces of Nam Dinh, Thanh Hoa, Ninh Binh, Son La, Yen Bai and Tuyen Quang.

Raw material options for serving trays, as well as charger plates, also include rattan, water hyacinth and seagrass. Rattan is usually procured from the provinces of Thanh Hoa, Lam Dong, Nghe An, Son La and Yen Bai. Seagrass is also sourced from Thanh Hoa, as well as from Quang Ninh, Hai Phong, Thai Binh and Nam Dinh. Water hyacinth is from provinces in the Mekong Delta region.

For clay, used in porcelain, stoneware and earthenware products, Thai Nguyen, Vinh Long and An Giang provinces are the main sources. Buffalo horn can be sourced from Ha Tay province or imported from Africa.

Cotton and linen for table cloths, mats and runners are from suppliers in Ho Chi Minh City and the provinces of Ninh Binh, Hung Yen, Binh Duong and Hanoi. Wood for spoons, forks and plates is sourced from Nam Dinh and Ha Tay provinces.

Plastic materials, which is used across all tableware categories, are procured from Ha Nam province. MDF, a common raw material for serving trays, is imported from China and Malaysia.

Sustainability remains the keyword in terms of raw materials. In line with this, suppliers continue to use bamboo, rattan, water hyacinth and seagrass in their releases. Recycled items such as repurposed paper, carton and eggshell are also being adopted as embellishments on bowls, trays and plates. Coconut shells are also being offered as decorative bowls.

For designs, asymmetrical and novelty-shaped plates and trays are growing in number even as basic round, square and rectangular pieces remain widely available. Color options range from classic white to bright hues such as red and orange. Multicolor products are also offered.

Tableware suppliers release an average of 10 new models annually. Products under ODM contracts account for approximately 60 to 70 percent of output, according to interviewed suppliers.

Products under OEM agreements make up the rest. Vietnam tableware suppliers can usually provide samples of custom designs in seven to 10 days.

Manufacturing & QC

Production of bamboo, rattan and ceramic tableware is mostly done by hand or with the aid of a simple tool or machine.

Vietnam tableware suppliers have at least five people conducting quality checks at various stages of production. Among the internationally recognized standards usually followed by tableware makers are those of the US Food and Drug Administration and the German Food & Commodity Goods Law, or Lebensmittel-Bedarfsgegenstande und Futtermittelgesetzbuch (LFGB). Suppliers typically comply with the requirements for the CE Marking as well.

Spun or coiled bamboo & rattan items: Suppliers of these products typically belong to the handicraft industry. At these makers, about 80 percent of the manufacturing process is done manually.

To achieve the desired shape, for instance, bamboo and rattan strips are spun or coiled by hand around wooden or cement molds. Products are sanded for a smooth finish in preparation for finish, and this is typically done manually or with the help of simple machines.

Workers apply the finish using a paintbrush or a spray-painting device. Lacquer finishing can be done in-house or subcontracted to craft villages in Hanoi.

Products are checked against specifications through touch or visual inspections.

Ceramic items:Similar to bamboo and rattan items, many processes in the production of ceramic tableware are still done manually. Molding and finishing are among these processes.

Clay is poured into a mold or shaped into bowls, cups and plates using molds or turntables, although there are companies that use casting machines. Drawing and painting of the artwork are done by hand using felt tip pens and paintbrushes.

Makers of ceramic tableware use furnaces which use straw, wood, coal or bamboo as fuel. Some makers have invested in gas-fired kilns.

QC is applied at every phase. The size and thickness of the molded shapes are checked against specifications. During the drying stage, QC personnel check the humidity of the products using thermometers. After firing, the products are checked for any cracks or breakage.

Pricing

Quotes vary depending on the materials used, and the complexity and size of the design. Decorative elements such as mother-of-pearl or eggshell inlay, embroidery and carvings push up prices. For sets, the number of items included is also a key price determinant.

In the dinnerware and serveware categories, for instance, plates and serving trays made of melamine, rattan or bamboo are widely available for less than $3 per piece. Lacquered versions, as well as stainless steel and wooden options, are priced higher.

Among salad servers, spoons and forks made of bamboo or coconut wood can be bought for less than $3 each. Between $3 and $10 are sets comprising one spoon and fork or a pair of claw salad servers made of bamboo and featuring lacquered handles. Higher up the price range are buffalo horn sets.

For drinkware, cups and mugs made of wood or glazed ceramic are offered for less than $1.50. Quotes for lacquered buffalo horn models, on the other hand, exceed $3.

Prices quoted in sales contracts are typically good for one to two years.
