Vietnam Sourcing: Bags 2017 Industry overview
Vietnam Sourcing: Bags 2017

This section discusses key issues affecting export manufacturers in Vietnam, offering insight into industry composition and important supply centers.
|Vietnam's bag exports||Competitive advantages||Challenges||Industry composition|
Buyers will find a wide range of fashion, business and travel bags from Vietnam. Handcrafted bags made of natural materials are widely available, as inputs such as seagrass, bamboo, water hyacinth and rattan can be sourced domestically. Apart from these stylish statement pieces, suppliers also offer practical business bags and luggage, including laptop briefcases, sturdy backpacks and wheeled suitcases.
Vietnam’s bag exports are expected to remain on an upward trend, with some suppliers anticipating as much as 50 percent growth in overseas sales. China’s reduction of incentives for investment in the textile and footwear sectors to focus on high-tech industries is an opportunity for growth, as this may divert orders for bag and footwear processing to Vietnam, according to a July 19, 2017 report by Viet Nam News.
To boost the competitiveness of their products, suppliers are enhancing both the form and function of their bags. A number have also invested in more efficient manufacturing systems to reduce production costs.
Vietnam’s exports of handbags, purses, suitcases, headgear and umbrellas have seen continuous growth in the past few years. In 2016, the country exported nearly $3.17 billion worth of these products, up 10 percent from 2015, according to data from the General Department of Customs, Ministry of Finance of Vietnam.
In the first six months of 2017, Vietnam sent abroad about $1.66 billion worth of handbags, purses, suitcases, headgear and umbrellas, which represented a year-over-year increase of 4 percent. The US was the largest single-country importer, accounting for approximately $676.6 million, or 41 percent of the export value.
Japan ranked as the second largest importer of the products, with roughly $179.9 million worth of orders. The Netherlands came in third, accounting for $150.8 million of the export value.
The data from the General Department of Customs, Ministry of Finance of Vietnam, are not broken down by types of product. 2015 statistics from the DESA/UNSD, United Nations Comtrade database, however, indicate that models with textile or plastic exteriors account for the majority of the export value.
In 2015, Vietnam sent abroad nearly $2.55 billion worth of trunks, handbags, suitcases, camera cases and similar bags, with products having outer surface of plastic or textile accounting for $1.59 billion or over 60 percent of the export value.
Models with leather exteriors, meanwhile, contributed about $337.9 million or 13 percent. The Vietnam Leather, Footwear and Handbag Association (LEFASO) anticipates that 2017 export sales of these products, together with those of footwear and other leather goods, will grow more than 10 percent year-over-year to reach $18 billion, according to a Jan. 7, 2017, report on The Voice of Vietnam.
Vietnam suppliers offer a diverse selection of handcrafted bags at competitive prices. The product range comprises traditional bags woven from natural materials, as well as trendy contemporary designs.
Among the factors enabling companies to do this, is the domestic availability of various natural materials. Handmade bags from the country include models made of rattan, bamboo, water hyacinth, seagrass and palm leaves, which are popular in the international market for their use of sustainable materials.
Another factor enabling Vietnam products offer handcrafted models at competitive prices is its relatively low labor costs. Minimum wages across the country are lower compared with several other production hubs, including China, Thailand and Malaysia.
The country’s workforce includes artisans who can execute a diverse range of bag constructions and decorative details. Makers hire workers or subcontract processes to workshops located in Vietnam’s more than 3,000 craft villages, which serve as home to artisans capable of intricate embroidery, weaving, crocheting and other skills.
In addition to enabling its diverse selection and competitive prices, the factors highlighted above allow Vietnam bag suppliers to accept orders as few as XX without charging additional fees.
Another advantage that bag suppliers in the country have is Vietnam’s various free trade agreements (FTAs), which allow duty-free importation of bags into signatory countries. As a member of ASEAN, the country is a member of the ASEAN Free Trade Area and it has FTAs with China, South Korea, Australia and New Zealand, India and Japan. Vietnam also has bilateral FTAs with Japan, Chile and South Korea.
Among the latest trade deals that have taken effect is Vietnam’s agreement with the Eurasian Economic Union (EAEU), which comprises Russia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Armenia and Kyrgyzstan. Under the Vietnam-EAEU FTA, which took effect in October 2016, duties on handbags, trunks and other cases are scheduled to be eliminated in 2025.
Negotiations for the Vietnam-EU FTA ended in December 2015. The agreement is expected to enter into force in 2018.
Many suppliers offering bags made of leather, textiles and plastic are unable to compete with China counterparts when it comes to price due to underdeveloped supporting industries. With the domestic supply of these materials unable to meet demand, most companies import their requirements, which raises production cost and product pricing by 10 to 20 percent. Consequently, Vietnam makers position their products in the midrange or high end because their products are at a disadvantage in the low end.
Producers of genuine and synthetic leather bags, for one, source the majority of their materials from India, Thailand, mainland China, Taiwan and South Korea. For nylon and polyester mesh, most companies look to mainland China, South Korea.
Most bag manufacturers also source their equipment overseas. Sewing machines, for example, are typically from Taiwan or Japan. Fabric-cutting and printing facilities are usually from Taiwan or mainland China.
Rising labor costs are also a concern since the manufacturing process at most companies remain labor-intensive. While still relatively low compared with several production hubs in Asia, minimum wages in Vietnam are up about 7 percent from 2016 levels.
Some makers have upgraded their production systems to reduce labor costs and meet buyer requirements on product quality. These are mainly large companies, however, as they are generally the ones with the financial resources to invest in automated machinery.
The exact size of the manufacturing base is unknown. For leather handbags, however, there are more than 100 suppliers, according to the list on LEFASO’s website.
Suppliers operating on a small scale account for the majority of the bags industry. These companies employ fewer than 200 workers and have 1,000 to 3,000sqm factories. They have a monthly output of about 120,000 pieces and post an average of $500,000 in annual export sales.
Midsize companies post between $500,000 and $1.7 million in yearly exports. Operating 3,000 to 5,000sqm facilities and with workforces ranging from 200 to 300, they produce 120,000 to 450,000 bags monthly.
Suppliers with larger factories and workforces produce more than 450,000 pieces monthly. These companies generate over $1.7 million in export sales annually.
Suppliers that specialize in handcrafted fashion bags using woven rattan, water hyacinth, bamboo and similar materials are found in the northern provinces of Hanoi, Thai Binh, Ninh Binh, Bac Ninh and Bac Giang. In the south, the production hubs for such bags are Ho Chi Minh City and Binh Duong, Tien Giang, Dong Nai and Ben Tre provinces. In Central Vietnam, the centers of manufacturing are Thanh Hoa and Khanh Hoa provinces.
Makers offering other types of bags are based mostly in the cities of Ho Chi Minh and Hanoi but have factories in the provinces of Binh Duong, Dong Nai, Ha Tay, Ninh Binh and Bac Ninh.

Materials & sources
In terms of materials, there are generally more options for fashion bags compared with business and travel bags. Silk, seashell, rattan, bamboo, water hyacinth, seagrass, mother-of-pearl and cowhide are some of the natural materials adopted. For synthetics, choices include PU leather, polyester and nylon.
In the latest releases, environment-friendly materials take center stage. Models in rattan, bamboo, seagrass, water hyacinth and palm leaves are popular in various markets for their natural colors and textures, which can be accented with ornate embroidery or beading.
For business bags, genuine and synthetic leather, nylon and polyester are the main options. Travel bags come primarily in synthetic materials. Nylon, polyester and synthetic leather are common choices in softside luggage. Hardside types come in PC, PP, ABS and aluminum.
Natural materials such as silk, seagrass, rattan, bamboo and water hyacinth are typically sourced domestically.
For handloomed silk, bag makers look to Ha Dong in the Van Phuc village of Hanoi. The material can also be obtained from Tan Chau village in An Giang province.
Seagrass is procured in Tien Giang and Thanh Hoa provinces. Rattan is typically sourced from Nghe An province and the city of Da Nang, while bamboo is from Hoa Binh and Thanh Hoa provinces.
Mother-of-pearl, meanwhile, is sourced from Hai Phong, Ha Tay and Quang Ninh provinces.
For their leather and fabric requirements, bag makers in Vietnam rely heavily on imports because the auxiliary industries in the country are still unable to address the supply gap.
Genuine and synthetic leather for fashion bags and business bags are usually sourced from Thailand, South Korea, Taiwan, India and mainland China, but the material can also be procured from the Mekong Delta region. Cotton canvas is sourced from the provinces of Dong Nai, Ninh Binh and Binh Duong, as well as the cities of Hanoi and Ho Chi Minh.
Nylon and polyester mesh are typically from mainland China and South Korea. Bag makers often source plastic and metal accessories from these areas as well, although some companies opt to import metal accessories from Japan for high-end models.
Vietnam suppliers offer various styles of fashion, business and travel bags. In the first two categories, shoulder and sling bags, totes and backpacks are among the popular offerings. For travel bags, volume buyers can find a range of wheeled and nonwheeled models.
Across all three product categories, efforts are geared toward visually appealing designs that are functional and user-friendly.
Makers are enhancing the aesthetic value of their products through beadwork, embroidery and prints. Another common option of creating a unique look is by combining two or more materials in a single model. Woven rattan bodies, for example, are paired with leather handles or straps. Many mother-of-pearl bags feature handles made of buffalo horn.
Tote fashion and business bags are being fitted with adjustable and detachable straps that allow these to be converted into shoulder bags, cross-body bags or backpacks. Multiple compartments and pockets for holding mobile devices, valuables and other accessories are also a common feature in the latest releases.
Wheeled softside luggage are designed with multiple handles to make them easier to handle. Models with backpack straps are also available.
Makers have three to five people focusing on the development of samples and new products. These personnel usually keep up to date with market trends through online research, reading fashion magazines, visiting fashion shows and getting feedback from buyers during trade shows.
Interviewed suppliers release five to seven new models each month. Samples of custom items can be prepared in five days.
Manufacturing & QC
Cutting, sewing, assembly and QC are usually done in-house. Most bag manufacturers have cutting, sewing, embossing and printing equipment at their factories, and these machines are typically imported from Taiwan, mainland China or Japan.
Fashion bag makers not specializing in woven, knitted and crocheted designs often subcontract processes that need to be done by hand to small workshops in craft villages. Weaving of the wicker parts, crocheting, beadwork and embroidery are some of the steps that are usually subcontracted.
QC teams typically consist of five to 10 people who conduct checks throughout the manufacturing process. Prior to production, these personnel inspect raw materials and ensure that these meet requirements. At various stages, they conduct random inspection and testing of semifinished and finished products using micrometers, tensile testers and other tools.
Makers also send products to third-party agencies for chemical evaluation and other tests on buyers’ request.
Products for export are manufactured according to internationally recognized guidelines such as those of the CE Mark. In quality management, several companies follow ISO 9001 guidelines.
Production lead time ranges from 25 to 30 days.
Labor costs account for about 50 percent of production expenses. Consequently, pricing depends largely on how labor-intensive the production of a bag is. The raw materials used and components such as buckles and wheels are another major determinant of quotes.
Buyers may also encounter higher prices during the period October to February, which is the peak season for orders. Costs of labor and other manufacturing inputs rise amid the increase in demand, which may push up quotes.
Tote and shoulder bags made from weaving bamboo, water hyacinth and seagrass strips are widely available for less than $20. The price range also covers business bags and wheeled softside luggage with polyester exteriors.
The selection above this price point includes laptop bags and briefcases made of genuine leather. Models made of cowhide, snakeskin and crocodile skin can exceed $100.
Quotes of bags made of natural materials have risen 10 to 15 percent in the past 12 months. The increase was attributed primarily to the high demand for bamboo, water hyacinth, seagrass and palm leaves, which pushed up rates for these inputs.
In the next six months, several makers offering models made of rattan, bamboo, water hyacinth and other natural materials plan to increase prices by 5 to 10 percent. These companies are raising quotes to cover higher raw material costs. Labor-related expenses are also expected to increase with the upcoming peak season.
Most suppliers, however, intend to keep prices stable, with the aim of attracting more buyers in the long run.
